This is why British children start their formal education earlier than those in many other countries. In England, compulsory education begins at the ages of 4.5 to 5 years in what’s known as the Reception class. However, this early start doesn’t mean that children’s school days are dull or strictly academic. Despite the long school hours—from 8:45 AM to 3:30 PM—learning primarily occurs through play and in an informal setting. Activities include playing, singing, dancing, engaging in arts and crafts, and going on educational walks, allowing children to explore the world and develop social skills through play.
Structure of Preschool Education
Preschool education in England is split into two main stages: Nursery and Reception.
Nursery: For children from 1.5 to 4 years old, this initial stage focuses on socialisation, exploring the world through play and creative activities, and developing speech. While not mandatory, most children do attend nursery, with the government covering up to 15 hours per week for those over two years old.

Although learning continues to be predominantly play-based, by the end of Reception, children can typically read simple sentences and perform basic arithmetic.

Public and Private Primary Schools
There are both public and private primary schools, and at this stage, the quality of education in a well-rated public school closely matches that of private schools. Public schools may have up to 30 students per class with two teachers, whereas private schools typically have 16-20 students per class. Public schools must accept all local children, including those with no English proficiency or special needs, whereas private schools can select their students.
Admission to Top Private Schools at Age 4+
Some top private schools offer primary education which allows children to enrol at age 4 and remain there until age 18, avoiding the complex entry process at 11+. These schools select children based on group interactions and play during assessments, looking for traits like curiosity and good communication skills.
